Date 20/8/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 507593

Scope and Content Turning mill, Forest of Birse, Aberdeenshire This group of buildings is a wood-turning mill, water-powered by two low-breast paddle wheels, both 1.06m wide, the upper one 4.88m diameter and the lower 3.05m in diameter. There is a site for a third wheel. This view shows the mill from the north east. The buildings are all constructed of vertically-boarded timber. They are situated in a notable forest area. This mill is probably the last of its kind in Scotland, and has for many years been a one-man business. A wide range of small turned wooden objects can be produced, a staple being porridge spurtles, used for stirring porridge. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
