Scope and Content 'The Kitchen' Crannog, Balmaha, Loch Lomond The area of the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park contains a rich variety of archaeological sites and historic landscapes, which continue to have a major impact on the environment today. Small trees betray the position of this crannog, an artificial island known as The Kitchen, which lies beneath the surface of Loch Lomond near Balmaha. It was built of boulders and timber piles, providing a solid platform for a timber round-house. There are at least 20 crannogs on Loch Lomond and the lochs of the Trossachs, probably dating from the period 500BC - 1000AD. The waterlogged conditions on crannogs often preserve organic artefacts that do not survive on other archaeological sites. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
