Description Peterhead, Golf Road, Fishing Station General View

Date 19/8/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 504621

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Salmon fishing station, Golf Road, Peterhead, Aberdeenshire This is the bothy and store block of a beach fishing station for salmon, and the earliest part is the oldest building associated with the fishing industry in Scotland. It is a rectangular crowstepped structure, extended to form an L. This view shows the building from the south west. The 16th century block is on the right, with a forestair giving access to the first floor. The addition on the left may be 18th century. Salmon-fishing was often a prerogative of the local landowner, though often contracted out. The style of the 16th century block suggests that it was built as an estate building.
