Scope and Content Foghorn, Girdleness Lighthouse, Aberdeenshire This lighthouse was built by the Northern Lighthouse Board to designs by Robert Stevenson. It marks the mouth of the river Dee and the entrance to Aberdeen Harbour. The foghorn was added in the late 19th century. This view shows the foghorn from the south west. The two cylindrical tanks contained compressed air piped from an engine room beside the lighthouse tower. The horn couls be moved in an arc to suit different wind directions. Foghorns have now been phased out in favour of radio beacons, but this one has been kept as a monument. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
