SC 504333

Description Justinhaugh Bridge, Aqueducts General View

Date 17/8/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 504333

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Syphon aqueducts, Craigeassie, Angus There are two parallel aqueducts here, both carrying water from Den of Ogil Reservoir to the town of Forfar, and both in the form of syphons to take the pipes over the river South Esk with adequate headroom. This view shows the ends of the two aqueducts, with the older one on the left. The ramped masonry abutments carry the main water pipes up to the level of the crossing. The riveted plate girder span was made by Oliver and Arrol, Edinburgh. The second aqueduct has an open hog-back truss carrying the pipe. The 1879 works were typical of the gravity water-supply systems constructed all over Scotland in the later 19th century for both domestic and industrial purposes.
