Scope and Content Drawing of the front elevation of the north west terrace, Great King Street, Edinburgh Great King Street, designed by Robert Reid in 1804 as the grand central avenue of the northern New Town, links Royal Circus and Drummond Place, which enclose it at either end. Feuing began in 1812, and was completed 1814-23. This drawing shows the terrace, with its similar central and end blocks, and the three-storeyed single houses which lie between. The main cornice-line, on the third storey below roof-level, unites the terrace from end to end. This was the principal street of the northern New Town, its four palace-fronted terraces being centrally divided by Dundas Street. The central and end blocks are one storey higher than the rest of the street, and were built as single and double flats. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
