Description 86 Great King Street Detail of dummy window from South

Catalogue Number SC 502930

Scope and Content Dummy ground-floor window, No 86 Great King Street, Edinburgh Great King Street, designed by Robert Reid in 1804 as the grand central avenue of the northern New Town, links Royal Circus and Drummond Place, which enclose it at either end. Feuing began in 1812, and was completed 1814-23. This six-pane dummy rectangular sash framed window is set into a round-headed window opening on the ground floor of the house. The aesthetic purpose of a dummy window in the northern New Town was to maintain the rhythm of openings in a façade in positions where a real window could not be built. Sometimes there is a cupboard or fireplace behind, reducing the thickness of the wall. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
