Scope and Content Glenisla School Bridge, Angus This is an unusual and early suspension bridge, with a combination of cable staying and suspension members. It is all made of forged wrought-iron, by John Justice of Dundee, apart from the timber deck. This view shows the northern end of the bridge. Note the elegant curved brackets giving sideways support to the pylons. The top four rods from each pylon are diagonal stays supporting the deck. The others form the railings, and also give some support. This was one of the first suspension bridges in Scotland, and may have been the first outside the Borders. It is the focal point for a series of footpaths from local farms to the parish church and school at Kirkton of Glenisla. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
