Scope and Content Murthly Station, Perthshire This was a two-platform through station opened in 1856 by the Perth and Dunkeld Railway. The main building was on the low north-bound platform, and was on a T-plan, one storey and attic, and unusually for the period, brick-built. This view shows the signal box on the south-bound platform, which controlled the passing loop and the level crossing. The box is basically of a standard Highland Railway pattern, but has more elaborate barge-boards than usual. The station was disused, but intact, in 1976. The station building and bridge have since been demolished and the level crossing replaced by a remote-controlled one with lifting barriers. The signal box building remains in existence, albeit no longer in use. It was listed by Historic Scotland in 1996 and has just been added to the Buildings at Risk Register for Scotland (Sept 2009).
