Scope and Content St Devenick Bridge, Cults, Aberdeenshire This is a suspension footbridge designed by John Smith, architect, with wrought-iron rod chains of the type patented by Captain Samuel Brown, supported on cast-iron Doric pylons, and supporting a trussed wooden deck. This view shows the bridge from the north west. The southern abutment has been washed away, resulting in the closure of the bridge. The elements of the design are clearly visible, as is the generally good condition of the structure. John Smith worked with Samuel Brown on the design and construction of the Wellington Suspension Bridge, Aberdeen, in 1829-31, where he was responsible for the design of the masonry pylons.
