Date 7/6/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 498780

Scope and Content Aberfeldy Mill, Perthshire This is a water-powered corn mill, probably built by the Breadalbane Estate, and extended and altered, probably in the mid 20th century. It was driven by an overshot waterwheel about 0.9 by 6.1m, but was not using grindstones by 1976. This view shows the three pairs of millstones removed from the mill when it was re-equipped. The stones on the right are solid stone; the others are built-up stones, made from pieces of quartzite. The one on the left was made in Edinburgh. This mill was still in use in 1976 producing animal feeding-stuffs, in the ownership of McKerchar and McNaughton, a subsidiary of BOCM. It has since been reconverted to stone grinding and opened to visitors. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
