Scope and Content Inverfarigaig Pier, Loch Ness, Inverness-shire This pier was built to designs by Thomas Telford as part of the scheme of transport improvements in the highlands undertaken under the auspices of the Commissioners for Highland Roads and Bridges in the early 19th century. This view shows the pier from the south west. The original Telford pier is the well-built rubble section on the right. It has been extended twice, once in mass concrete, probably in the late 19th century, and then in timber with a rubble filling. This pier was designed to link the road system south of the Great Glen with the Caledonian Canal, of which Loch Ness is a part. Even before the canal was opened in 1822 boats plied on Loch Ness conveying passengers and goods. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
