Scope and Content Oykel Viaduct (also known as Shin Viaduct), Sutherland, Highland This viaduct was built in 1867 for the Sutherland Railway, and designed by Joseph Mitchell and Murdoch Paterson. It has a wrought-iron main truss span 70.1m long, with two arched approach spans on the south and three on the north. This view shows the viaduct from the east. The track runs on top of the truss. The two southern approach spans are on the left. This is the only crossing of the Shin for some distance on either side, and there are stations on either side for the convenience of passengers wishing to cross at this point.
