Scope and Content Dunbar's Close, Canongate, Edinburgh Dunbar's Close gets its name from David Dunbar, an 18th-century writer, who owned the tenements on both sides of the Close. This 19th-century view of the Close shows clearly the timber extensions to the stone buildings. In the 19th century the Canongate had become rather decayed. A century earlier there was an oyster cellar here, run by a Mrs Love. Robert Burns used to come here and watch the ladies of fashion, who often came out in masks to eat oysters and drink porter. Dunbar's Close today is known for its garden. This is laid out in the manner of a 17th-century garden and it was donated to the City of Edinburgh in 1978 by the Mushroom Trust.
