Scope and Content Tailors' Hall entrance, Cowgate, Edinburgh The Tailors' Hall was built in the Cowgate in the early 17th century. At this time the Cowgate was a fashionable street inhabited by many wealthy people. There were fine houses and it boasted its own wells to ensure the quality of the water. The Tailors' Hall was the centre of the Incorporation of Tailors, and it reflected the wealth and power of the old City Guilds. It has been used for many purposes, and as the Cowgate fell out of fashion the building was much altered. The original street frontage was demolished, though some details of the original building survive elsewhere. Here a group of locals gather by the entrance. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
