Scope and Content The Royal Mile, Edinburgh This view of the Royal Mile was made in 1647. It shows the heart of the High Street around St Giles' Cathedral. To the right of the Cathedral is the Mercat Cross, built in the 15th century, to which traders came to ply their wares. The illustration clearly shows the crowded housing, with high tenements, and narrow wynds and closes leading away from the main thoroughfare. Public wells stand either side of the Cathedral. In 1636 the Royal Mile was described as 'the glory and beauty of this city'. By 1847, however, it was 'narrow' and 'filthy' and 'poverty and misery seem to peep out of the open hatches which normally serve as windows'. Today it is much restored.
