Scope and Content Connel Bridge, Argyll and Bute This cantilever bridge across Loch Etive was opened in 1903 by the Caledonian Railway as part of a branch from the Callander and Oban Railway at Connel.. It was designed by Sir John Wolffe Barry, John Forman, HM Brunel and E Crutwell. This view shows the bridge from the south west, with its steel cantilever main span of 152.5m and some of the three masonry approach spans on each side. This is the second longest steel cantilever bridge in Britain. It was built to take both road and rail traffic, and from c1909 to 1966 road vehicles could use the bridge when trains were not running. Since 1966 it has been a road bridge only. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
