Portsoy, Old Harbour View from Harbour entrance

SC 494560

Description Portsoy, Old Harbour View from Harbour entrance

Date 10/6/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 494560

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Old harbour, Portsoy, Banffshire This is one of the oldest harbours in Scotland, and consists of an outer breakwater pier on an L-plan, a straight inner pier, and the quayed landward sides of the basin formed by these piers. It is built of sandstone rubble. This view shows the harbour from the north east, with the harbour light on the left and the end of the outer breakwater pier on the right. Note the warehouses and substantial merchants' houses on the broad inner quays. The construction of harbour works on this scale indicates how commercially successful this part of Banffshire was in the late 17th century. The sheltered location and absence of development pressure allowed the works to survive with little change. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
