Scope and Content Old harbour, Portsoy, Banffshire This is one of the oldest harbours in Scotland, and consists of an outer breakwater pier on an L-plan, a straight inner pier, and the quayed landward sides of the basin formed by these piers. It is built of sandstone rubble. This view shows the inner pier on the left, with the breakwater pier beyond. To the right is the tip of the 'new' harbour of 1825-8, and to the left the end of one of the warehouses now used by the Portsoy Marble Co and the Portsoy Pottery. The construction of harbour works on this scale indicates how commercially successful this part of Banffshire was in the late 17th century. The sheltered location and absence of development pressure allowed the works to survive with little change. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
