Description Dryburgh, Suspension Bridge View looking N along walkway

Date 8/8/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 494368

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Suspension footbridge, Dryburgh Abbey, Berwickshire This was a wire-rope suspension footbridge across the river Tweed, giving access to Dryburgh Abbey. It replaced one of the first suspension bridges in Scotland, built in 1817-18. This view shows the deck of the bridge looking east, with the paired suspension cables, an unusual feature. The bridge was unusually long in span, and the deck was of very light construction. This bridge was closed in the 1980s; its current status is not known. The original bridge was designed by Captain Samuel Brown, pioneer suspension bridge designer, and had chain suspension cables. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
