Scope and Content New Bridge, Ayr, Ayrshire This is a five-span masonry bridge, with segmental arches and rounded cutwaters, and a granite balustraded parapet. It was designed by Blyth & Cunningham, Edinburgh. This view shows the bridge from the west. Note the flatness of the arches and the slenderness of the battered piers. Beyond the bridge can be seen one of the piers of the Auld Brig of Ayr, built 1470-1525, now a footbridge. This bridge replaced a narrower, more elaborate bridge designed by Robert Stevenson. Until the building of the Ayr bypass in the 1960s this bridge carried the main road traffic through Ayr. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
