Bridge of Dye View from ESE showing SE front

SC 494274

Description Bridge of Dye View from ESE showing SE front

Date 11/6/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 494274

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Bridge of Dye, Aberdeenshire This is a most unusual bridge, unique in Scotland as a single-span ribbed-arch road bridge, and with an unusually long span (21.3m) for the 17th century. Its semicircular arch is typical of the period. This view shows the bridge from the upstream side. Note that the arch is narrower than the abutments on the left-hand side, and the ribbed construction, somewhat out of date by the late 17th century. This bridge has been bypassed since 1976, and its replacement is too close to the old bridge to allow it to be seen to advantage. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
