Scope and Content Salmon fishing station, Tugnet, Spey Bay, Morayshire This station at the mouth of the Spey is the largest and finest salmon station in Scotland. It consists of a U-plan block of bothy, stores and boiling house, a courtyard range of fishermen's houses, and a three-chamber icehouse. This view shows on the left the bothy and boiling house range, and on the right the front of the courtyard of fishermens' houses with its central arched pend and wallhead chimney. Salmon fishing was widely practised in Scotland, especially on the north and east coasts. Provision of houses for fishermen in this integrated manner was rare, though bothies were often built, as salmon catching was tide-dependent. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
