Scope and Content Salmon fishing station, Tugnet, Spey Bay, Morayshire This station at the mouth of the Spey is the largest and finest salmon station in Scotland. It consists of a U-plan block of bothy, stores and boiling house, a courtyard range of fishermen's houses, and a three-chamber icehouse. This view shows the bothy and boiling house range of the U-plan block, with the twin brick-topped chimneys of the boiling pans. Note the massive and regular masonry, unusual in structures of this character. Salmon fishing was widely practised in Scotland, especially on the north and east coasts. At one time fish were par-boiled for shipment to the London market, hence the boiling house here. This range is dated 1783. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
