Sligachan, Old Bridge General View

SC 494137

Description Sligachan, Old Bridge General View

Date 19/5/1976

Collection John R Hume

Catalogue Number SC 494137

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Old bridge, Sligachan, Skye This is a well-proportioned three-span rubble bridge, with the central span larger than the other two, built as part of Thomas Telford's programme of transport improvements for the Commissioners of Highland Roads and Bridges. This view shows the bridge from the north west. Note its very plain construction. Apart from the relatively slender piers, it is in the style of a much earlier period. The wildness of the surrounding scenery is characteristic of much of southern Skye, and hints at the difficulty of road-building in such country. This bridge has been bypassed by a single-span reinforced-concrete structure. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
