Scope and Content British Linen Bank (now Bank of Scotland), Tower Street, Tain, Highland Tain, a medieval place of pilgrimage, became a royal burgh by 1567. It expanded from the late 18th century onwards during which time the layout of its streets was rationalised. The British Linen Bank (now Bank of Scotland) was built in 1845 to designs by George Angus. The door is bracketed by Classical flattened pillars, or pilasters. Mathematically defined architectural styles or Orders used by the Ancient Greeks and Romans during the Classical period were rediscovered by Renaissance architects and remained fashionable until the 20th century.
