Scope and Content St Anthony's Chapel, Holyrood Park, City of Edinburgh St Anthony's Chapel is one of the most popular, and romantic, places in the Park. The ruins are well-preserved and stand on a spur looking out across the Forth. They show a two-storeyed building, but surprisingly little is known about it. The exact date of the foundation of the building is unknown, but by 1426 it was in need of repair, and the Pope sent money for this and for new vestments. By 1581 it had gone out of use, though the building may later have been adapted for other purposes. Popular tradition asserts that there was a hermitage associated with the chapel but recent excavation has found little evidence for this. Masonry remains close by probably relate to a storehouse.
