Armadale Pier General View

SC 493555

Description Armadale Pier General View

Date 19/5/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 493555

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Pier, Armadale, Skye This is a reinforced-concrete steamer pier with flat-roofed pierhead buildings. On the inner side of the pierhead is a staircase to give access to small boats. This view shows the pier from the north west, showing the concrete piled substructure, and the solid concrete parapet, which is on the west, more exposed side of the pier. The vessel was on the summer-only service from Mallaig. This was one of the last piers in the west of Scotland to be built for conventional steamer traffic, before the advent of car ferries in the 1950s. It is still used by a ferry service, for passengers on foot only, from Mallaig. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
