Scope and Content Sea lock, Corpach, Caledonian Canal, Inverness-shire This is the entrance lock at the west end of the canal, It was lengthened to accommodate vessels serving the pulp and paper mill built nearby in the 1960s, and a new quay was built on the basin above, equipped with cranes. This view shows the top gates of the entrance lock. The recess in the lock wall is the original site of one of the top gates, before the 1960s lengthening. The cranes of the new quay are in the background. The canal was designed by Thomas Telford, and built with Government funding to provide a safe route, avoiding the dangerous Pentland Firth, for small warships and the generality of trading vessels of the period.
