Date 18/5/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 493304

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Railway swing bridge, Banavie, Inverness-shire This N-truss steel swing bridge was built to carry the West Highland Extension Railway over the Caledonian Canal. The engineers were Simpson and Wilson. This view shows the bridge from the east, looking along the railway track. Note the signal box on the right, with the railed wooden platform for the exchange of 'tablets', physical proof of the right to occupy a length of single railway track. The West Highland Extension Railway runs from Fort William to Mallaig, which is a ferry terminal for services to the Small Isles, Skye and Stornoway, and an important fishing port. The line is single track, except for passing places. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
