Scope and Content Former slate quay, Easdale Island, Argyll This quay was built for the shipment of slates quarried on Easdale Island, off Seil. Slates have been quarried on Easdale since the 18th century, but these houses are 19th century. This view shows the massive quay built out from the side of a natural inlet, and faced with vertically-set drystone slate rubble. There is a large area on the quay for stockpiling slate, ready for shipment. The slate from Easdale was the first west highland slate to be generally used outside the immediate vicinity of its production. At first the slates were made from loose material on island beaches, and quarrying began in the early 18th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
