Scope and Content Port Askaig Harbour, Islay, Argyll This harbour consisted in 1976 of the quayed side of a natural inlet, rubble-built, with a timber-piled face, a concrete and steel-piled ferry berth, and a small masonry pier, with a wood and concrete breakwater. This view shows the car ferry Sound of Jura approaching the pier at the harbour with a service from Kennacraig. The vessel moored at the pier is a small inshore fishing boat. The ferry service from Kennacraig was operated by Western Ferries with this vessel from 1969 to 1976, in competition with Caledonian Macbrayne, the State-owned ferry company.
