Scope and Content Former engine house, Mulreesh Lead Mines, Islay, Argyll The lead mines here have been worked since Norse times, but most actively in the 18th century. The surface remains of the workings are scattered over a large area, the most impressive being a cement-lined rubble-built dam and this engine house. This view shows the engine house from the south. It would have housed a steam beam engine, probably for pumping, and possibly also for winding ore out of a shaft. There is a block of three small cottages built on to the house. It is not clear from the ruin of the engine house exactly how the engine was disposed, or how it was used. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
