Scope and Content Port Ellen Pier, Islay, Argyll The first part of this pier to be constructed was a mortared rubble quay built on the side of a rocky promontory. This was extended in 1832, and a piled timber steamer pier was added in 1847, and remodelled in 1881. An oil jetty was added later. This view shows the steamer pier from the 1826-32 masonry pier. The gantries on the oil jetty are visible to the right of the mast of the sailing dinghy. The pier provision here was revised in 1973 by constructing a linkspan for a roll-on, roll-off ferry from Kennacrraig. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
