Scope and Content Rinns of Islay Lighthouse, Port Charlotte, Islay, Argyll This tall lighthouse was designed by Robert Stevenson for the Northern Lighthouse Board. It is on the small island of Orsay, and has a tapering circular-section tower rising from a D-plan single-storey base. The keepers' houses are flat-roofed. This view shows the lighthouse from mainland Islay. The masts on the right are for radio communication. The lighthouse itself is typical of the mature work of Robert Stevenson, with his characteristic diamond-pattern railings round the gallery. The lighthouse was built to serve the increasing volume of shipping, including steam ships and fishing vessels, travelling up the west coast of Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
