Scope and Content Cists at Traigh Bhan, Islay, Argyll and Bute Erosion of sand dunes at the head of Traigh Bhan, Islay exposed three cists. Excavation by RCAHMS in 1980 found human remains in two cists but not in the third. A build-up of sand to the north-west prevented further investigation of this site. In the first cist an earlier burial was rearranged to allow a second interment. Analysis of the bones suggested the person to have been female and aged 30-35. Associated with the burial was this food vessel, pictured here. Antiquarians believed vessels such as these to have held food for the dead, hence the name. Radiocarbon dates place these burials in the Bronze Age. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
