Scope and Content White Horse Close, Canongate, Edinburgh White Horse Close, formerly Ord's Close, is the entrance to a court built for Lawrence Ord in the late 17th century. The White Horse Inn at the north end was the starting-point of one of the first regular stagecoaches to London. The court, once the site of the stables for the Royal Mews of Holyrood Palace, was rebuilt by Lawrence Ord with houses, hayloft, coaching stables and an inn named after a white palfrey or lady's saddle-horse. The Canongate was the starting-point of one of the first regular stagecoaches to London. In 1754 a stagecoach to London took eight days for the journey. Scotland Yard, London, was so called as this was the terminus for the coaches from Edinburgh. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
