Catalogue Number SC 488171

Scope and Content Three cists at Traigh Bhan, Islay, Argyll and Bute Erosion of sand dunes at the head of Traigh Bhan, Islay exposed three cists. Excavation by RCAHMS in 1980 found two cists held human remains. A build-up of sand to the north-west of the site prevented further investigation. This rather squat vessel is presumed to be a food vessel. However it is unlike many other food vessels as it lacks decoration and because of its shape. In the first cist an older burial was rearranged to make way for a second interment. The remains were found associated with this food vessel -a term derived from the belief by antiquarians that ceramic vessels such as these held food for the dead.
