Scope and Content Yarrow Stone, Scottish Borders Ploughing of the moorland known as Annan Street brought this Early Christian gravemarker to light. The slab was found at a depth of eight inches under the soil, and beneath the slab were bones and ashes. Badly weathered, the Yarrow Stone is difficult to read. Translations vary, but it could be read as: THIS IS THE EVERLASTING MEMORIAL IN THIS PLACE LIE THE MOST FAMOUS PRINCES NUDUS AND DUMNOGENUS. IN THIS TOMB LIE THE TWO SONS OF LIBERALIS. Quite who Nudus, Dumnogenus and their father Liberalis were is open to question. It seems likely they were British chieftains, ruling the surrounding area. Their grave probably lay in a small family enclosure, perhaps near a trackway. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
