Scope and Content Hugh Miller's Cottage, Church Street, Cromarty, Highland Cromarty was a depopulated and poor burgh until 1772 when George Ross purchased the Cromarty estate and went on to establish a rope-works and a brewery. The town flourished until about 1850 when both enterprises failed. This cottage (left) belonged to the 19th-century writer and geologist Hugh Miller. It was built in 1711 by John Feddes and is now in the care of The National Trust for Scotland. Miller House (right) was built in the early 19th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
