Scope and Content Greenhouse from south-west, Drummond Castle, Perth & Kinross This shows a lean-to greenhouse against the brick wall of the kitchen garden, next to a border of 'hosta' plants edged with a box hedge. Mechanical vents allow the temperature within the greenhouse to be adjusted by the gardeners to maintain the best conditions for the peach trees growing against the wall inside. The earliest types of hothouses were the 'orangeries' and 'stoves' of the 1700s, which were heated by open fires. Heated walls for growing fruit were also common, with trees protected by oiled paper or glass. By the mid-1800s it was possible to manufacture larger panes of glass which allowed the construction of huge conservatories supported by cast iron frames. Drummond Castle was built c.1490, but the complex of buildings visible today consist of a gatehouse which was added in 1630-6 by architect John Mylne III (1611-67) and an L-plan mansion built for the 4th Earl of Perth in 1689. The mansion was extended in the 18th or early 19th century, and remodelled in Baronial style into its present form by architect G T Ewing in 1878 and 1900. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
