Scope and Content Port of Ness Harbour, Lewis, Ross and Cromarty This harbour was created from a much smaller facility in 1893-94 to serve the growing local fishing fleet. It is formed by two massive concrete breakwater piers, the longer of which forms an inner basin, and the shorter protects the entrance. This view shows an open fishing boat on the sloping end of the inner basin. This a small example of the type of boat for which the harbour was built, known as the sgoth. The style of painting was characteristic of the Ness boats. This harbour was built with Government assistance at a time when there was much public concern about the crofting economy. The success of the fishery it served was short-lived, and it survives as a colossal monument. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
