Scope and Content Nos 39-43 Castle Street, Edinburgh Nos 39-43 Castle Street, built in 1793 by Edinburgh stone masons, Robert Wright and James McKain, is a double bow-fronted tenement, one of six in the street. The southern of the two main door houses, No 39, was the home of Sir Walter Scott from 1802-26. Nos 39-43 is wider than the other similar double bow-fronted tenements in the street, and is the most elaborate. The central part of its façade is a palace front, with four fluted Corinthian pilasters between the first and second floors. In 1795 the feu-charter for No 39 was granted to the Reverend Mr James Brown, minister of Newbattle, from whom Sir Walter Scott bought his house in 1802. The Reverend Brown also owned the two flats entered from the common stair at No 41. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
