Scope and Content Detail of a stained glass window from the Oyster Bar at the Café Royal, West Register Street, Edinburgh Detail of a stained glass window from the Oyster Bar at the Café Royal, West Register Street, Edinburgh This Victorian glass window of two elegant sportsmen represents rugby and cricket respectively, and is one of eight large stained glass windows of different British sports by the Edinburgh firm of glass-stainers, Ballantine and Gardiner. James Ballantine (1808-77), founder of the firm, Ballantine and Gardiner, was one of the first artists to revive the art of glass-painting. In 1845 he published a short work, 'Stained Glass, showing its applicability to every style of Architecture'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
