Scope and Content Early 19th century drawing of the Royal Scottish Academy, The Mound, Edinburgh The Royal Scottish Academy was designed by William Playfair in 1822-6 for the Board of Manufactures and Fisheries to accommodate the Royal Society, the Institution for the Encouragement of the Fine Arts, and the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. The original building, in the style of a Greek temple, had porticos, each with a single row of Doric columns, to the north and south. Each side of the building was lined with Doric columns. The pedestals were designed for sculptural groups. In 1822 it was agreed 'that it will be of great advantage to obtain a Public Building at the north end of the Mound according to the Plans of Mr Playfair now approved'. It was 'to be of Grecian Architecture' and the estimated cost was £13,850. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
