Scope and Content Mount Royal Hotel, Nos 52-63 Princes Street, Edinburgh Princes Street was originally the south-facing terrace of James Craig's New Town. From the 1830s, reconstruction continued to transform the street into Edinburgh's principal thoroughfare of hotels, department stores, shops, offices and clubs. The Mount Royal Hotel, a good example of 1950s architecture, was designed in 1955 by Tarbolton and Ochterlony who also designed the extension to Jenners next door in 1966. The tall modern block has green slate oriel windows and a recessed top storey. The hotel building, originally designed as a 1950s extension to the old Royal Hotel which occupied most of the site, became known as the Mount Royal Hotel in the 1970s. The old hotel building was refronted to become part of Jenners department store. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
