Scope and Content Woolworth's, Princes Street, Edinburgh Princes Street was originally the south-facing terrace of James Craig's New Town. From the 1830s, reconstruction continued to transform the street into Edinburgh's principal thoroughfare of hotels, department stores, shops, offices and clubs. F W Woolworth's store was built on this corner site, formerly occupied by the Crown Hotel, in 1925. It was probably designed by Woolworth's own architect, W Priddle, and extended to the west in 1956. Woolworth's occupied the site of two notable houses: the first house to be built in Princes Street in 1769 for John Neale, a silk mercer; and the office and shop of Archibald Constable, publisher of Sir Walter Scott.
