Scope and Content Queen Street, Edinburgh, looking eastwards Queen Street, the longest continuous sequence of late 18th-century house fronts in Edinburgh, was the northern-facing terrace of James Craig's gridiron plan for his New Town. The houses had an open view of countryside down to the Firth of Forth. The frontages of the houses are not uniform. The average width is 10m, with three openings in the front on every floor. The entrance, at one end of the front, is usually framed by pilasters. The windows are generally plain and fitted with hung sashes. In 1853, John Ruskin, English author and art critic, counted 688 identical windows in Queen Street, and described them as 'altogether devoid of any relief or decoration' as an example of the monotony of the New Town.
