Scope and Content St Andrew Square, Edinburgh Nos 22-24 on the north side St Andrew Square, the eastern square of James Craig's New Town, was built speculatively in the 1770s and does not have the unified design of Charlotte Square. It began as a fashionable residential area and is now a square of banks and insurance offices. These three townhouses date from the 1770s, and the house on the left was built by the builder, John Young. The centre house was transformed in 1846 by David Bryce for the Exchange Bank of Scotland, and has one of his best Italian Renaissance façades. John Young (d.1801), builder, built two houses on the north side of the square in 1775 to the height and general arrangement of the other houses. They were rubble-built and had main door flats with a second door serving a common stair. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
