Scope and Content Scottish Equitable Life Assurance Offices, No 27-8, north side of St Andrew Square, Edinburgh The Scottish Equitable Life Assurance Offices, designed by Dick Peddie and George Washington Browne in 1897, replaced two original townhouses at the east end of the north side of the square in 1899. This pink sandstone building has large Bolsover gables above giant Corinthian pilasters. The Board Room is in the centre of the first floor, facing the square. In the late 19th century, when the Craigleith quarries, which had supplied the pinkish grey or yellowish brown sandstone for most of the New Town buildings, became worked out, red sandstone from Dumfriesshire began to be used for Edinburgh's buildings.
